Bradley officer killed: Darius Sullivan arrested in Indiana in shooting of Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic; Xandria Harris surrenders – WLS-TV

BRADLEY, Ill. (WLS) — Two suspects in a motel shooting that killed a Bradley police sergeant and wounded her partner were taken into custody Friday.

The two suspects had been on the run after Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic was killed and her partner, Tyler Bailey, was critically wounded as they responded to a call at a Comfort Inn Wednesday night.

The first suspect, Darius D. Sullivan, was arrested in North Manchester, Indiana Friday morning, authorities said.

Indiana State Police said Sullivan was arrested after a search warrant was executed by U.S. Marshals and a SWAT team at about 9:30 a.m. at a home in the 1000-block of Bond Street in North Manchester, near Fort Wayne.

Cellphone video showed police clearing the home and people walking out with their hands in the air.

Sullivan and another person from Kankakee were taken into custody without incident, police said. Narcotics and weapons were found inside the home, police said.

Sullivan is being transported back to Kankakee County, Illinois State Police said. The sheriff’s office was offering a $25,000 reward for information that led to his arrest.

Earlier at about 3:30 a.m., police said a car was driving the wrong way on a one-way street in Rochester, Indiana. After initiating a traffic stop and a chase, two men, ages 20 and 26, from Kankakee, were arrested.

They were both charged with possession of stolen property, resisting law enforcement and possession of a handgun without a license. The relationship between Sullivan and the other men arrested from Kankakee is under investigation.

A second suspect in the shooting of the Bradley officers, Xandria A. Harris, 26, turned herself in to Bradley police Friday afternoon. Harris is believed to have been in the room with Sullivan at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

Harris’ attorney, Phil Haddad, wouldn’t share her involvement in the shooting that night, but said she turned herself in voluntarily.

“Charges have been filed,” Haddad said. “She maintains her innocence. She’s a mother of three children and she’s pregnant.”

Harris will appear in bond court Monday, Haddad said.

Anyone with information about the suspects is urged to call the Illinois State Police Hotline at 815-698-2315. Tipsters can also remain anonymous by calling that number or CrimeStoppers at (815) 93-CRIME.

Wednesday night, Sgt. Rittmanic and her partner responded to a call Wednesday night of dogs barking in an unattended car in the parking lot at the Comfort Inn off of Route 50, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said. They went to the hotel room where the car’s owner was staying when police say the people inside the room began attacking the two officers, shooting them.

Rittmanic, 49, was killed, and her partner, 27-year-old Tyler Bailey, was badly hurt. Bailey was transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he underwent surgery for severe head injuries, and remains very critical condition Thursday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Rittmanic first became an officer in 2000 with the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department. She had been with the Bradley Police Department for 14 years, and her niece said she was just five years away from retirement. She leaves behind her wife, Lynette Stua.
