Jan. 6 hearings: Live coverage and latest updates, Day 4 – The Washington Post

Two days after the 2020 election, an attorney advising Trump’s team, Cleta Mitchell, expressed support for convening alternative electors in a bid to thwart certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

“John — what would you think of producing a legal memo outlining the constitutional role of state legislators in designating electors?” she wrote to John Eastman, another Trump attorney. “A movement is stirring. But needs constitutional support.”

Tuesday’s hearing of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack is expected to examine how the fake elector scheme was organized and executed, as my colleague Roz Helderman wrote Monday.

Meanwhile, Mitchell’s law firm is still being paid by Trump’s leadership PAC, Save America, which sent $15,000 to the firm, Compass Legal Services, last month, according to federal records. The payment was for “legal consulting,” according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission. Save America also sent $75,000 to JPRowley Law. That firm’s managing member, John Rowley, has represented Mitchell in her bid to quash a subpoena from the House select committee.

Compass Legal Services has been paid by a wide range of Republican campaigns and committees, including those of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
