A 911 audio recording obtained Thursday depicts the urgent call of a man who said he had located the mother of the Oxford High shooting suspect as police searched for her and her husband.
“The parents of the shooter that are running away, they’re here,” a man’s voice is heard on the audio clip of a 911 call made at 10:43 pm Dec. 3. The Free Press obtained the recording under the state Freedom of Information Act.
Law enforcement officials were on the hunt for Jennifer and James Crumbley, who were wanted in connection with the shooting earlier that week on Nov. 30 in Oxford High School that killed four students and injured several others.
The U.S. Marshals and Oakland County Sheriff’s Department had put out alerts asking the public’s help in locating the couple. Police later found them in the basement of a building on Bellevue Street on Detroit’s east side.
The caller on the 911 recording provided police the Bellevue Street address of the building where the couple was later found.
After he told the operator he was calling about the “parents of the shooter,” the 911 operator asked him to explain.
“The Oakland shooter, the kid has the two parents that are on the run right now,” the caller said. “Oakland County said call if you see anything. And I just went to go park my car and switch it around at my office. I’m in my office. And there was a Kia that looked like their car.”
After discovering the Kia, the caller said he “walked around and checked the license plate and it’s their car, and the woman is here.”
The mother was “sitting next to her car in the parking lot,” wearing a hoodie, he said.
He told the operator the license plate of the Kia.
“I can’t believe that they’re here,” he said. “It’s crazy.”
Jennifer and James Crumbley are facing involuntary manslaughter charges for their alleged roles in the school shooting. Prosecutors allege the couple ignored their son’s depression and obsession with guns for months, failed to get him help and failed to notify the school about the gun they had bought him just four days prior to the shooting.
Their son, Ethan Crumbley, is facing first-degree murder and terrorism charges and has pleaded not guilty. So have his parents. All three Crumbleys are being held at the Oakland County Jail.
