On Impeachment, What Goes Around Comes Around

Commentary

After having been bandied about for some time, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has finally directed a House committee to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Some things are obvious, including the hoary cliché, “What goes around comes around.” If the Democrats tried to impeach President Donald Trump on the flimsiest of evidence, President Biden—on whom the evidence is vastly more substantial—became a target too rich to resist.

“House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,” House Speaker Kevin Mr. McCarthy said at the Capitol. “Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption. Through our investigations, we have found that President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings.”

“The American people deserve to know that the public offices are not for sale and that the federal government is not being used to cover up the actions of a politically associated family.”

This is well beyond President Richard Nixon and Watergate, where the crime was the coverup.

This time the alleged crime is the crime—and some crime, at least potentially. The Biden family seems to have been involved in pay-for-play activities for millions of dollars with a half dozen or more countries, at this point—among them our enemies China and Russia, as well as our putative friend Ukraine.

Who knows where it will end if the 5,400 emails, many apparently addressed to or from President Biden under pseudonyms, currently being guarded, if that’s the word, by the National Archives are revealed.

The opportunities for intelligence surveillance and consequent manipulation of our government officials for enemy ends could be myriad.

A can of worms is being opened here and, if followed through, are likely to be radioactive worms, spreading radiation throughout our government.

And if you believe, as many do, there is a cancer on our republic, then you can only hope this will result in some kind of cure—or at least the beginning of one.

To achieve that, everything must be examined.

To begin with, most, not all, of the allegations surrounding President Biden and his family took place when he was vice president.

At that point, he was working at the behest and supposedly the supervision of President Barack Obama, who gave him the Ukraine brief in the first place.

What did President Obama and his team know then of Vice President Biden’s activities? In Ukraine, he was televised in essence bragging about having engineered the firing—imposing a six-hour deadline, no less—of their government’s prosecutor investigating an allegedly corrupt Burisma, the company where his son Hunter Biden was working for a small fortune.

Surely President Obama, who was publicly referenced on the video with the words “Call him,” knew something about this.

What of Vice President Biden’s other international activities? To what extent was President Obama or others working with him aware?

And then there’s the matter of when they all knew about what’s now called the Russia hoax and the instigation of the plot to bring down candidate and later President Trump.

Obviously, there’s a lot here. It’s not just about Hunter Biden and his drug problems.

It’s about our country.

As many will remember, post-Watergate, Nixon resigned and was ultimately pardoned by President Gerald Ford.

It’s likely there are current officials who are petrified and are “lawyering up,” as the saying goes. That’s probably been going on for some time but is sure to have escalated by news that Speaker McCarthy is moving ahead.

Above all, this investigation must be followed through and be as transparent as possible.

It’s no secret that inside the Republican Party are those who despise President Trump as much as the Democrats do. This is not time for partisanship or self-interest. The future of our country is involved. The truth will come out, if not now, ultimately. Those who acted cowardly or self-interestedly will be exposed by history.

It should finally be remembered that during Watergate some Republicans were able to cross party lines and condemn for his, in this case, lesser alleged crimes. Let’s hope some Democrats will be able to act the same, thus helping save their party for opprobrium and move on with our system.

As for the mainstream media, they are probably too far gone in their biased culpability. They are, and have been for some time, the engineers in the coverup of all this. Our best hope is to ignore them and in so doing put them out of business.

In the end we must answer the question, “What did Presidents Obama and Biden know and when did they know it?”
