A throwback magazine of Prince William has royal fans in shock after the publication alleged the new Prince of Wales and pop star Britney Spears were dating back in the early noughties. The “photo” depicted the young 17-year-old royal and pop royalty, dressed in a navy suit with a blue striped shirt and tie, and the US singer in a backless strappy top, respectively.
The magazine front cover read, “The Prince & the Pop Star. Why the Palace is afraid of Britney Spears”. Instagram account @literally.iconic shared the front cover on their page and captioned the post: “Britney Spears almost became the queen of England. In 2002 Britney said that she and Prince William exchanged emails and that he was supposed to see her somewhere but it didn’t work out.”
Inside the magazine was an alleged quote from the ‘Toxic’ singer, which read: “He is sweet, but I don’t like castles… Maybe I’m a screwball, but I’m no princess.”
The post garnered over 11,441 likes and several comments, with many people shocked at the surprise pairing. Followers shared their theories and thoughts on the suspected high profile relationship, as one person said: “The irony of this story is that she lives in a kind of castle. To me, when you own a house with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, it’s a castle.”
Another commented: “And then she throws a fairy tale wedding.”
However, one Instagram user appeared to be a fan of the pair, writing: “Would be the best match.”
A second replied: “Lol around that time I heard he had a huge crush on Britney Spears.”
A third joked: “In a different universe she became the queen.”
It was alleged the two had been exchanging emails and the singer invited him to visit her and perhaps go for a meal. However, when Britney appeared on ITV1’s Frank Skinner Show, she revealed the meeting never happened in the end.
ABC News reported that at the time Skinner asked the then-20-year-old chart topper about her relationship with the 19-year-old prince, and if she had become “quite friendly” with him. She said, “Yeah, it was just like, all blown out of proportion — we exchanged emails for a little bit and he was supposed to come and see me somewhere but it didn’t work out.”
Skinner added: “You were blown out by Prince William?” Spears replied, “Yeah.” The Prince of Wales went on to marry his wife Catherine, the new Princess of Wales in 2011. Britney married Jason Allen Alexander in 2004, but had the marriage annulled after a matter of days.
