A forgotten photo of young King Charles shows he shared an uncanny resemblance with son Prince Harry and grandson Archie as a baby.
As adults, the United Kingdom’s new King and his second son, the Duke of Sussex, have distinctly different physical appearances. However, an image unearthed from the archives reveals that the pair actually looked very similar as infants – and so did Harry’s son Archie.
The undated black-and-white photograph shows King Charles III alongside his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and is a rare example of what the 73-year-old King looked like as a baby. In it, he is dressed in a white cotton gown with puffed sleeves and broderie anglaise trim, as was common for babies to wear in the 1940s.
He is held by the late Duke of Edinburgh, who faces the camera with a proud smile while dressed in a dark suit and tie along with a white shirt, his hair combed neatly. The Queen is wearing a neutral-coloured dress with 3/4 sleeves, accessorised with a string of pearls, bracelet, jewelled broach and rounded earrings.
The sweet family portrait also shows a young Charles furrowing his brow as he looks down at the necklace with curiosity and attempts to grab it with one of his hands. His mother Queen Elizabeth is beaming with a wide, toothy grin while out of the frame.
The former sovereign seemingly has her arm lifted over her chest to subtly pry the jewellery item from her baby son’s grasp. However, the image doesn’t just capture a surprisingly candid and happy moment for the young family – but also the resemblance the former Prince of Wales shared with family members.
The new King’s appearance in the old photo shows striking similarity to many of images of Prince Harry, 38, at a similar age, as well as to his grandson, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, now aged three. While Charles’ hair looks to have been darker than Harry and his son’s signature red, all three certainly shared the same full cheeks and curious expressions.
King Charles III was born on November 14 1948 as Charles Arthur Philip George Mountbatten-Windsor. His son Harry – full name Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor – was born with first wife Diana, Princess of Wales, on September 15 1984.
Prince Harry is fifth in line to the British throne. Before him in the line of succession are his older brother William, the heir apparent, and the three Cambridge children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Harry’s own son Archie was born on May 6 2019 and is sixth in line for the crown. He also welcomed a daughter with wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in June 2021.
