Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk have floated rehiring a DOGE staffer who resigned over controversial social media posts.
WASHINGTONâEd Martin, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, has written to Elon Musk that those âwho appear to be stealing government property and/or threatening government employeesâ may face consequences as he begins an inquiry.
President Donald Trump named Martin the districtâs new U.S. attorney, replacing Matthew M. Graves, an appointee of President Joe Biden who prosecuted individuals involved in the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021. Twenty-six FBI confidential human sources were present in Washington in connection with those events, according to a 2024 report from the Justice Departmentâs inspector general.
Martin, former president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, was sworn in as U.S. attorney shortly after Trumpâs inauguration on Jan. 20.
Martinâs Feb. 7 letter follows a Feb. 3 statement in which he said an early assessment âindicates that certain individuals and/or groups have committed acts that appear to violate the law in targeting DOGE employees.â
âWe are in contact with FBI and other law-enforcement partners to proceed rapidly,â Martin said.
The FBI is now under the leadership of Acting Director Emil Bove, who was a member of Trumpâs legal defense team.
Martinâs statements come after WIRED reporting disclosed the identities of a number of employees working for DOGE, a time-limited commission housed in the Executive Office of the President as a repurposed version of the U.S. Digital Service.
What appeared to be the Bluesky account of Jared May, who works at Boston Universityâs Questrom School of Business, posted a graphic stating that the individuals named in the initial WIRED reporting were âWanted Dead or Alive.â
A spokesperson for the university told Boston.com that the institution is âaware of a post made by an employee on his personal social media account,â adding that âthe views expressed do not reflect the values of Questrom School of Business.â
One DOGE worker, Marko Elez, resigned from his post after Wall Street Journal reporting linked a now-deleted, pseudonymous X account associated with him to controversial posts.
But Elezâs time with DOGE may not have come to an end.
Vice President JD Vance has called for Elez to be brought back to DOGE.
âI donât think stupid social media activity should ruin a kidâs life. We shouldnât reward journalists who try to destroy people. Ever,â Vance wrote on X. âIf heâs a bad dude or a terrible member of the team, fire him for that.â
Trump said in a press conference on Friday that he thinks Elez should be rehired.
