Mayorkas, impeached once for handling of border crisis, is on the hot seat over Hurricane Helene response
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas shopped for luxury clothes in Georgetown on Saturday afternoon as his agency faced criticism for its response to the devastating flooding in North Carolina and Georgia.
Mayorkas, who was impeached by the House of Representatives earlier this year for his handling of the border crisis, was spotted by the Washington Free Beacon strolling through the mens section of Sid Mashburn, a high-end menswear store, surrounded by security. He appeared to purchase some items at the store, where suit jackets go for as much as three thousand dollars.
As of Saturday morning, there were still more than 170,000 power outages in western North Carolina alone, according to the state’s Democratic governor, Roy Cooper.
The Department of Homeland Securityβs sub agency, FEMA, is tasked with the recovery efforts in areas that were battered by Hurricane Helene last month. Estimated damages from the hurricane may top $30 billion and at least 227 people have died. Hundreds more are missing.
Mayorkas said earlier this month that FEMA “does not have enough funds for the remainder of the hurricane season.” His comments drew outrage from Republicans, who noted that the agency spent hundreds of millions of dollars on housing and care for migrants.
“The real story here is that the Biden-Harris administration has spurned the interests of the American people since day one, pushing for hundreds of millions of FEMA dollars every year, specifically for illegal immigrants,” Rep. Mark Green (R., Tenn.), who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, said in an Oct. 4 statement.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R, S.C.) suggested on Friday that Republicans could impeach Mayorkas again for his handling of Hurricane Helene.
“Already voted to impeach @SecMayorkas once,” Mace wrote on X. “Who thinks we need to do it again?”
