Depressed liberals are increasingly at risk of suicide due to so-called climate change, according to a group of European and French-Canadian scientists. The alleged findings, while morbid, could signal a bright future for the human race. A world with fewer annoying people would make life more tolerable for the rest of us. The species would grow more resilient, and the planet might also (somewhat ironically) benefit from the decline in population, assuming it isn’t a hoax.
“Negative psychological responses related to the observed and anticipated impacts of climate change, such as climate anxiety, eco-anxiety and climate-related guilt have … emerged as a potential risk factor for poor mental health and suicide-related behaviors,” the authors wrote last month in Nature Medicine. “International surveys show that concern about climate change is associated with feelings of despair, hopelessness, anger, frustration and guilt, especially among younger populations.”
The intention of the article, which summarized available data on the link between climate change and suicide, was to “draw attention to the systematic ways in which climate change can, and very likely will, increase risks for suicidal behaviors in populations across the world.” The scientists cited an “umbrella review of 32 meta-analyses,” concluding that a 5 percent increase in global suicides was attributable to “climate change-related heat anomalies.” That figure is expected to rise to 7 percent by 2050, which is around the same time climate “experts” now believe the Arctic Ocean will run out of ice. Former vice president Al Gore, among others, had predicted the ice would disappear by 2014.

The authors appear concerned that existing studies of suicidal behaviors are too focused on “individual-level factors” such as childhood abuse, adolescent bullying, and unemployment while failing to account for “broader sociological influences,” including the alleged phenomenon of climate change. Accordingly, they argue that the “impacts of climate-related hazards on suicide risk should be understood using an ecological framework situated within a developmental life course perspective.” Whatever that means.
Additional scientific studies suggest that liberals who obsess over politics are particularly at risk of climate-related suicidal behavior. The link between suicide and depression is well established, and American adults who identify as politically liberal are more likely than conservatives to report lower levels of happiness and physiological well-being, according to researchers at Columbia University. Mental health experts suspect the disparity is “at least partly explained by liberals’ tendency to spend more time worrying about stress-inducing topics like racial injustice, income inequality, gun violence, and climate change,” David Craig wrote in a 2023 article for Columbia Magazine.
Even the depressed liberals who don’t commit suicide are doing their part to improve the human species by refusing to procreate. A 2020 Morning Consult poll found that 26 percent of childless adults cited climate change as a factor in their decision not to have kids. Ezra Klein, the liberal New York Times columnist, wrote in 2022 that the question he gets asked “more than any other” is whether it’s morally unjustified to have children on account of climate change.
Younger liberals are among those most opposed to procreating. David Hogg, the 24-year-old child activist and recently elected co-chair of the Democratic National Committee, proclaimed he was “never” having kids in a bizarre social media rant. “I would much rather own a Porsche and have a Portuguese water dog and golden doodle,” the deranged liberal wrote. “Long term it’s cheaper, better for The environment and will never tell you that it hates you or ask you to pay for college.” Hogg went on to explain how “awesome” it was that he knows so many other young people “who literally throw big actual birthday parties for their dogs that they have friends invited and everything.”
This is sad, obviously, but great news for humanity.
