More than a hundred migrants on Thursday tried to force their way across the U.S. southern border in Texas, overwhelming the National Guard troops deployed there by the state’s governor Greg Abbott (R.).
Around 600 migrants showed up at Texas’s border with Mexico, with many in the crowd tearing through razor wire and knocking over National Guardsmen, according to the New York Post. Migrants were seen pulling away fencing while five guards tried to block their entrance, the outlet reported.
Abbott has placed National Guardsmen at Texas’s border with Mexico as part of his Operation Lone Star, defying the Biden administration’s warnings against Texas shutting down sections of the border. “President Biden has violated his oath to faithfully execute immigration laws enacted by Congress,” Abbott said in January. “Instead of prosecuting immigrants for the federal crime of illegal entry, President Biden has sent his lawyers into federal courts to sue Texas for taking action to secure the border.”
The Supreme Court on Tuesday sided against the Biden administration in allowing to go into effect a Texas law that permits the state’s law enforcement officials to arrest individuals accused of trying to enter the United States illegally. A federal appeals court put the Texas law on hold hours after the Supreme Court’s ruling.
