Police Release Report on Alleged Assault of Rep. Nancy Mace

James McIntyre has been charged with assaulting the Republican congresswoman.

WASHINGTON—Police have released their report detailing the incident in which a man allegedly assaulted Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) at the Capitol on Dec. 10.

The suspect, who is from Illinois, has been charged with a count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees. He pleaded not guilty in the District of Columbia Superior Court on Dec. 11.

“I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-trans man. One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it’ll heal just fine. The Capitol police arrested the guy. Your trans violence and threats on my life will only make me double down,” Mace wrote on X on Dec. 10.

The man, identified as James McIntyre, 40, told Mace during the incident that “trans youth deserve advocacy,” according to the Dec. 11 police report.

The incident appeared to be in response to Mace successfully pushing for people on Capitol Hill to use the bathroom in accordance with their biological sex.

This is ahead of Representative-elect Sarah McBride (D-Del.) being sworn in as the first transgender member of Congress.

McIntyre decided to “aggressively shake her arm up and down,” according to the police report.

The report stated he approached Mace in the halls of the Rayburn House Office Building on Dec. 10 and extended his hand in an apparent attempt to shake her hand.

She reciprocated, it said.

However, the suspect “took her hand with both of his hands and shook her arm up and down in an exaggerated, aggressive hand-shaking motion,” according to the report.

When police talked with her about the incident, she “appeared to be favoring her right arm and holding it close to her body,” according to the report.

She told officers that McIntyre offered his right hand to shake her hand and “upon their hands coming together, placed [his] other hand on top of the victim’s hand in a clasping manner so that the victim’s hand was between both of the subject’s hands,” the report said.

Mace also told officers “she was in shock of the situation and did not say anything to the subject during the interaction” and “that she felt intimidated and unable to pull away when she tried,” according to the report.

Additionally, she “reported that she was experiencing pain in her wrists, arm, and armpit/shoulder due to the incident,” the report said

.

Mace declined medical treatment, according to the report.
