‘Revolt’: Dem Voters Turning on Their Leaders in Record Numbers, Polls Find

Democratic voters are “on the verge of a Tea Party-style, intra-party revolt” against their party’s leaders in Congress, Politico reported Friday based on recent polls.

Only 40 percent of Democrats now approve of Democratic members of Congress, while 49 percent disapprove, marking the first time that congressional Democrats have fallen underwater with their own voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. A year ago, 75 percent of Democrats rated their leaders favorably, while just 21 percent expressed disapproval.

The infighting comes as Democrats, who lost the White House and both chambers of Congress in November, struggle to regain their footing two months into President Donald Trump’s second term. Recent polls from CNN and NBC News show that the party’s favorability has plunged to record lows of 29 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

Democrats also face a tough battle to regain control of the Senate next year, needing to defend 3 open seats and achieve a net gain of 4 to overturn the 53-47 Republican majority.

Voter dissatisfaction is driven partly by what they see as congressional Democrats’ weak response to the Trump administration, Politico reported. Polls from CNN and Data for Progress found that a large majority of Democrats want their leaders to take a tougher stand against Trump. Their frustration deepened after Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) helped advance a GOP-backed funding bill to avert a government shutdown.

Democrats are also sharply divided over the party’s direction during Trump’s second term. A recent Gallup poll shows that 45 percent want the party to shift toward the center, 29 percent want it to shift even further leftward, and 22 percent say it should stay the same, Politico reported.

Nearly 70 percent of voters in swing districts, meanwhile, see congressional Democrats as out of touch, prioritizing political correctness over real issues, according to a poll conducted earlier this month by the Democratic group Navigator Research.
