The flags have been at half-staff since Dec. 29, the day of former President Jimmy Carterâs death, and will be returned to that status on Jan. 21, Johnson said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on Tuesday that flags at the U.S. Capitol will be returned to full-staff for Inauguration Day and then to half-staff the next day to continue honoring former President Jimmy Carterâs recent passing.
The Biden administration didnât respond to The Epoch Timesâ question on whether it would make an exception for Inauguration Day.
âThe U.S. Flag is otherwise flown at half-staff (or half-mast, on ships) when directed by the President of the United States or a state governor,â the code states.
âAs we unite our country and usher in this new era of leadership, I ordered all flags to be raised to full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings for the inauguration of President Trump,â Abbott said.
Though the state honors Carterâs leadership, Abbott said, itâs time to celebrate the countryâs âbright future ahead.â
âThe Democrats are all âgiddyâ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at âhalf mastâ during my Inauguration,â he said in a Truth Social post. âThey think itâs so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they donât love our Country, they only think about themselves.â
The difference between âmastâ and âstaffâ is that mast is used for flags on ships, while staff is a term for flags on land.
For the first time during any presidential inauguration, the flags will be at half-staff, which is not what the American people want, Trump said.
âLetâs see how it plays out,â he said.
âIowa will celebrate and recognize this historic change in our countryâs leadership by raising our flags,â Reynolds said.
