The Trump administration on Aug. 15 agreed to leave Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith in charge of the force, instead of appointing an emergency police commissioner to lead the department.
Exercising powers under the D.C. Home Rule Act, President Donald Trump recently took command of the MPD, and called up around 800 National Guard troops as part of a crackdown on crime, illegal immigration, and homelessness within the city.
