The president reasoned that Jack Ciattarelli ‘is ’best positioned’ to win.
President Donald Trump announced that he is endorsing Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey governor’s primary race.
A former state assemblyman, Ciattarelli narrowly lost to Democratic incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy in the 2021 gubernatorial race. He announced last month that he’s running for the 2025 election.
“Jack, who, after getting to know and understand MAGA, has gone ALL IN, and is now 100 percent (PLUS!). He is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected Leaders in New Jersey, and, as your next Governor, Jack Ciattarelli will work closely with me and the Trump Administration to advance our America First Agenda,” the president wrote.
The endorsement gives Ciattarelli’s campaign a boost as he competes against several other Republican candidates. They include former radio host Bill Spadea and New Jersey state Sen. Jon Bramnick. It’s the third time Ciattarelli will be running in the gubernatorial race.
Also in his social media post, Trump wrote that Ciattarelli “is best positioned to STAND TALL against the Radical Left Democrats and, most importantly, ensure a Big Victory in this Very Important Gubernatorial Election, an Election that is being closely watched by the entire World because, we are ending WOKE, and all of the other NONSENSE that goes along with it.”
Trump’s endorsement comes after he met earlier this year with Ciattarelli at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club.
“It’s time to unite our party, win big in November, and make New Jersey affordable and safe again,” he also said. “When I’m Governor, we will.”
Spadea released a statement responding to Trump’s endorsement to multiple media outlets, suggesting the president was backing Ciattarelli because some polling indicated he was in the lead.
During the 2024 election, Trump made gains in New Jersey compared to his performance in the 2020 presidential election. The president narrowed the gap between himself and his Democratic opponent last year, losing the Garden State by around 6 percentage points to Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2020, President Joe Biden won the state by 16 points.
Trump also flipped several counties from blue to red in 2024, including Morris, Passaic, Gloucester, Atlantic, and Cumberland, according to election data.
Ciattarelli’s campaign has said it sought the president’s endorsement and pointed to his performance in the 2024 election in which the president flipped those former blue counties red.
On the Democratic side, Murphy is term-limited and cannot seek reelection in the race. The candidates include Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Rep. Mikie Sherill (D-N.J.), among others.
The statewide primary elections in New Jersey will take place on June 10.
