The groups are accused of trying to âstoke sociopolitical tensionsâ ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The United States has imposed new sanctions on entities in Iran and Russia, accusing them of trying to interfere in the 2024 elections.
The sanctions, announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Treasury, target a subsidiary of Iranâs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as well as an affiliate of Russiaâs military intelligence agency over their attempts to âstoke sociopolitical tensions and influence the U.S. electorate during the 2024 election.â
In Tuesdayâs announcement, the department said the intelligence service both directed and funded the center to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Using these resources, CGE allegedly operated a network of âat least 100 websitesâ to spread false information.
âCGE and its personnel used generative AI tools to quickly create disinformation that would be distributed across a massive network of websites designed to imitate legitimate news outlets to create false corroboration between the stories, as well as to obfuscate their Russian origin,â the department said.
The Russian center also âmanipulated a videoâ to âproduce baseless accusations concerning a 2024 vice-presidential candidate,â according to the department. It did not specify which candidate was targeted.
The sanctions also target Iranâs Cognitive Design Production Center, which the Treasury Department said planned âinfluence operationsâ to âincite socio-political tensions among the U.S. electorate in the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. electionsâ on behalf of the IRGC.
This is not the first time the federal government has penalized the IRGC, a designated foreign terrorist organization, for election interference.
According to federal prosecutors, the three hackers tried to break into the email accounts of Trump campaign officials and the former presidentâs allies. They then sought to âweaponizeâ the stolen information by sharing it with media outlets and individuals associated with President Joe Bidenâs campaign.
