A former Trump official was shot Monday night in Washington, D.C., which has faced a surge in murders and carjackings.
Mike Gill, who served as the chief of staff to the chairman and chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under former president Donald Trump, is in critical condition after the shooting, according to Fox 5.
Gill was a victim of a near-12-hour crime spree that occurred Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to WUSA9. The suspect allegedly entered Gill’s car while he was waiting to pick up his wife and shot him in the head. Gill’s wife then found him sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood, the Washington Post reported. Police said the suspect then went on to perform one attempted and three successful carjackings—shooting and killing another victim in the process—across D.C. and Maryland before twice shooting at officers. Police later fatally shot him.
“Mike is an amazing husband, father, friend and colleague,” Gill’s family told Fox 5. “He has a wonderful sense of humor, no matter the situation. He makes friends with everyone—and is always looking for opportunities to bring people together and make them feel included and loved.”
The shooting came days after the Department of Justice announced an initiative to combat the surge of murders in the nation’s capital. While other large cities saw a significant drop in crime in 2023 compared with the previous year, D.C. saw homicides increase 35 percent.
