Democratic Florida lawmakers urge Rubio, DeSantis to act on affordable housing – WESH 2 Orlando

Three Democratic state lawmakers and a county commissioner are calling out Florida Sen. Marco Rubio on what they say is his lack of action on the state’s affordable housing crisis.The Democratic lawmakers criticized Rubio for his lack of support for federal programs.They cited the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Plan. They say both programs would help provide more affordable housing in central Florida. They also claim Sen. Rubio and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis benefit from the financial support of corporate hedge funds that are buying up thousands of residential properties in Florida.”Goldman Sachs, other Wall Street companies are buying properties right here in Central Florida and jacking up the price, selling it to newcomers, often buying it with cash. So, if you’re a local getting a mortgage, you can’t compete with that,” said Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando.A Rubio campaign spokeswoman addressed the criticisms.”This is just another desperate stunt from Florida Democrats hoping to escape responsibility for driving up costs as Florida families are struggling in Biden’s recession. The $1.9 trillion American ‘Rescue’ Plan Demings voted for last year was called an ‘extraordinary policy mistake’ by a former Obama economist and dramatically drove up Floridians’ cost of living. Demings and her cronies in Washington are complicit in the record inflation and sky-high gas prices that are crushing Floridians. Meanwhile, Senator Rubio has been working to lower costs and improve housing conditions, including by: making it easier for first responders and teachers to buy a home; holding slumlords accountable for failing their tenants; and reducing foreign investment in the urban real estate market,” she said.WESH 2 News reached out to DeSantis to get reaction to the criticism.
