Florida spent $5.9 million on security for DeSantis, his family, others

The cost of protecting the governor, first family and traveling dignitaries to the state of Florida continues to rise. The latest Travel and Protective Services report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement explains how much it costs the agency to provide transportation, agent salaries, food and lodging to ensure safety and security in the fiscal year 2021-2022 which ended June 30. Just to protect Gov. Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis and their children, as well as guard the mansion and transport them by air on the state plane or on the ground, cost $5,943,267. That compares to roughly $4.8 million in the fiscal year 2019-2020, the first full year DeSantis was in office. Additionally, 74 events featuring visiting dignitaries, most often other states’ governors, cost $154,095. That’s actually a decline of $120,000 from the $274,000 spent in the fiscal year 2019-2020. The total bill this year from FDLE was about $6.1 million. All of it courtesy of the taxpayers of Florida.
