Gov. DeSantis to Square Up Against Former Republican in Florida

Florida’s Democrats have elected a governor candidate they believe is best suited to beat rising Republican star Ron DeSantis: a former Republican governor. Charlie Crist told supporters Tuesday night that the only way to stop a DeSantis run to the White House is by handing him a loss in Florida. In Miami, DeSantis refused to acknowledge Crist’s win, instead sticking to his campaign message, telling supporters: “Florida is a state where woke goes to die.” Crist beat out agriculture commissioner Nikki Fried, the only elected Democrat currently serving in the state, who ran on a progressive, pro-abortion rights platform. Ukraine Commemorates First Independence Day Since Invasion

Kyiv residents took to the streets on Wednesday for the country’s 31st Independence Day, watching a unique military parade. Rather than Ukrainian forces, who are busy defending the country elsewhere, locals cheered for the burned-out husks of confiscated Russian military hardware. “I am grateful to everyone who, since Feb. 24, has chosen the path of struggle for what makes life real: for freedom, for independence,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech. Still, he warned, be prepared for “something particularly ugly, particularly vicious” from Russia. Shelling at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is of marked concern for the Ukrainian side. Whistleblower Complaint Threatens to Blow Apart Twitter’s Nest

Peiter Zatko was dismissed as the platform’s security chief in January. Now, he’s filed a whistleblower complaint that threatens to put Twitter on the back foot in its dealings with would-be buyer Elon Musk, and invite regulatory investigators. Twitter has made false and misleading remarks about its safety practices, Zatko alleged in the July complaint. He said that the platform is less concerned with spam than with accelerated growth, and had lied to Musk. Zatko has been subpoenaed by Musk’s legal team as Twitter tries to force the $44 billion acquisition Musk backed out of in July. (Sources: NYT, The Guardian)

Malaysia Jails Former PM in Mammoth Corruption Case

Najib Razak has 14 days to file for a royal pardon or he will be stripped of his status as member of parliament. The wide-sweeping corruption case funneled at least $4.5 billion from the country’s sovereign wealth fund 1MDB by Najib’s cronies from 2009 to 2014. An investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice found $700 million had been transferred into an account identified as “Malaysian Official 1,” later confirmed to be held by the then-prime minister. Najib’s UMNO party was turfed from government for the first time in post-independence history in 2018, largely off the back of public outrage. (Sources: Malaysiakini, AP)

China’s Heatwave Is the Hottest, Longest in Human History

“There is nothing in world climatic history which is even minimally comparable to what is happening in China,” weather historian Maximiliano Herrera said. Large parts of China have experienced record heat well above 104°F for two months, prompting the government to issue a national drought alert last week — the first of its kind in nine years. The country faces disaster. Parts of the Yangtze River are drying up, down to their lowest levels since records began in 1865. Hydroelectricity power generation, which depends on the river, is under stress, and in regions like Sichuan province, crops are dying en masse. (Source: New Scientist

Yelp Is Sticking a Warning Label on Anti-Abortion Clinics

It’s the latest strike in Big Tech’s response to the Supreme Court overruling of Roe v. Wade. “Crisis pregnancy centers” will now be tagged with a note that medical professionals may not be found on-site, and that the centers offer limited options. Similar moves by other companies like Google have been met with resistance by conservative elements. Yelp isn’t worried: “Providing consumers with reliable and useful information to help inform their decisions is critical to our mission.” Almost 470 clinics in the U.S. have been identified this year on the site as anti-abortion clinics, often with links to religious organizations. Pandora Streaming Is No Laughing Matter Says Lopez

Comedian George Lopez has joined Lewis Black and Andrew Dice Clay in suing the streaming platform. Lopez says Pandora has been streaming his comedy albums Right Now Right Now and Team Leader without licensing or paying any royalties. “[Pandora] decided it would infringe now to ensure it had this very valuable intellectual property on its platform to remain competitive, and deal with the consequences later,” a filing on behalf of Lopez said, adding “Later is now.” It’s not just Pandora. Spotify has faced similar allegations from comedians, including John Mulaney and Tiffany Haddish, whose albums have since been removed. (Source: The Verge)

Losing Just One Hour of Sleep Can Make You Hate the World

Recently published research from the U.S. found that even one hour of reduced sleep results in people becoming less likely to help someone out — even close friends or family. “We discovered that sleep loss acts as a trigger of asocial behavior, reducing the innate desire of humans to help one another,” co-author Matthew Walker says. Researchers working with 24 participants found that there was a 78% drop in altruism among the cohort following a restless night. It has a community-wide impact too, they found. Charitable donations drop 10% after American sleepers lose an hour to daylight saving time. (Source: The Guardian)

‘I Made a Mistake’ Says Suspended Padres Shortstop

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was slapped with an 80-game suspension earlier in the month following revelations he had taken performance-enhancing drugs. “I haven’t made the right decisions in these past two weeks, month, even the start of the year,” Tatis said. He tested positive for Clostebol, which he maintains he used for a long-term skin condition. Padres management was “surprised and extremely disappointed,” according to a statement. He will shortly have shoulder surgery and sit out all games this year, with the remainder of the 80 games to be missed next season. (Sources: SI, NBC San Diego)
