WATCH: Ron DeSantis wants to focus on the present, says ‘Chill!’ to 2024 talk – Washington Examiner

Newly reelected Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) wants nothing to do with questions attempting to bait him into discussing a 2024 presidential run.

“We just finished this election, ok? People just need to chill out a little bit on some of this stuff, I mean seriously. We have this Georgia runoff coming, which is very important for Republicans to win,” DeSantis said Wednesday.

DeSantis was asked about a “GOP Civil War” as the Florida governor’s popularity is upstaging that of former President Donald Trump. Yet, DeSantis is focusing on the present.

“I know around the country that Florida was kind of the biggest bright spot. It was not so bright in other parts of the country. It was a substandard performance, given the dynamics that are at play,” DeSantis said. “I think what people like me, who’ve been given the opportunity to continue is [to say], ‘Ok, let’s do something with that.’’

DeSantis noted his intent to continue fighting for the freedoms of Floridians as he touted his state’s election results.

“The reason why we won historic victory is at the end of the day, we led, we delivered, and we had your back when you needed us,” DeSantis added. “That is why we won big.”

A recent Economist/YouGov poll surveyed nearly 1,300 registered voters and found 46% of Republicans favored DeSantis as the party’s presidential nominee over 39% for Trump.

Multiple Latino Republican operatives told the Washington Examiner that the Latino vote is expected to be a significant factor in how many Republicans choose to back DeSantis instead of Trump.

For the moment, DeSantis has encouraged Republicans in Georgia to be sure and vote for Herschel Walker in the state’s runoff election for U.S. Senate against Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock.
